Nimble

Adding a touch of interactivity and movement to light

I noticed that lamps, though necessary in every home, are most often ignored after being switched on. While lighting elements are commonly praised for fine industrial design, it is rare for people to have extended interactions with a lamp. With this in mind, I created Nimble, a lamp that bobs and twirls around when touched due to its a weighted base. One can tap Nimble and, rather than toppling over, it optimistically jumps back up, dancing in front of its user's eyes. Nimble is unobtrusive enough to remain in the background when it needs to, but when touched--say, when a person is moving things around on their desk, or even bored and fidgety--it awakens and playfully greets its user.
